18 ITFWORLD SPRING 2014 knack of stepping up his game when it comes to Davis Cup, but Fognini on clay in the quarters was too big an ask as the Italian won in four sets. Due to fading light, Murray had to return on Saturday morning to complete a straight-sets victory over Andreas Seppi, before the Wimbledon champion and Colin Fleming put Britain one win away from the semifinals with a hard-fought four-set win over Fognini and Simone Bolelli. Fognini had shown the typical ups and downs in his temperament all weekend, but there was none of that on the final day as he produced a stunning performance to beat Murray in straight sets for his 12th consecutive Davis Cup singles win on clay, before Seppi overcame nerves to seal the 3-2 comeback with victory over Ward. A 3-2 win over Netherlands in Ostrava set up a quarterfinal meeting with Japan, who beat 2013 semifinalists Canada 4-1 in Tokyo in February to claim their first-ever World Group victory. Japan suffered a huge blow before the quarterfinal tie, also at the Ariake Coliseum, as Kei Nishikori was forced to pull out with a left groin injury and Go Soeda came down with a fever, although the Czechs were hardly fighting fit themselves with only three players in the team after Berdych was unavailable for selection and Jan Hajek was ruled out with a knee injury. Stepanek and Rosol provided enough strength, though, to see the Czechs win their 11th consecutive tie. The pair won their respective singles matches on day one, although Rosol was pushed to five sets DAVIS CUp BY BNp pARIBAS Stanislas Wawrinka recovered after a bad start against Kazakhstan Germany's Peter Gojowczyk was a revelation defeating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga Czech Republic could still win a hat-trick of Davis Cup titles Andy Murray's defeat to Fabio Fognini was just his second Davis Cup singles loss in 21 matches
