NEWS ROUND-UP AUTUMN 2013 ITF mourns loss of Eiichi Kawatei The long and distinguished career of tennis administrator Eiichi Kawatei ended with his death in August at the age of 79. ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti said, "The tennis family has lost an exceptional man." From Ashiya City, Japan, Kawatei was a leader in the development and promotion of tennis in Asia and worldwide for more than 40 years, supporting the ITF, national associations, players, officials, coaches and many international events. Kawatei was highly active with the ITF for over 30 years, serving as a member of the Committee of Management, member of the ITF Board of Directors, Vice President, Chairman of the Junior Competitions Committee, and Honorary Life Vice President. He was also a Technical Delegate for the Olympic Tennis Event for every Games from Seoul 1988 until Beijing 2008 Kawatei was Tournament Director of the Federation Cup in 1981, 1985 and 1989, and of the Japan Open and Asian Open in 1977-86. He was a Japanese Olympic Committee member (1991-2003), Asian Tennis Federation President (1989-2003) and Secretary General (1978-89), and Japan Tennis Association Executive Board member (1977-93) and Vice President (1993 onwards). He was the founder of the International Club of Japan. He was recognised for his contributions to tennis by his peers many times, most recently being presented with the Olympic Order of Merit in 2012. Kawatei was also an active member of the international tennis media as a photographer, TV commentator and journalist, and was a nationally-ranked junior and university player. Djokovic and Murray to headline World Tennis Day The line-up for the 7th annual BNP Paribas Showdown at Madison Square Garden in New York will feature Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, providing the perfect end to World Tennis Day on 3 March 2014. As well as featuring the rivalry of the moment, there will be a unique brothers doubles match with John and Patrick McEnroe teaming up to take on 15-time Grand Slam champions Mike and Bob Bryan. The BNP Paribas Showdown is one of the most highprofile events taking place on the second annual World Tennis Day next year. The event is produced by MSG Sports and StarGames. USA in top form for Super-Seniors Championships Roz King helped USA win the Queens' Cup and won the women's 75 singles 22 ITFWORLD AUTUMN 2013 USA showed once more that it is the dominant nation in Super-Seniors team tennis by winning six of the ten titles on offer at the ITF Super-Seniors World Team Championships staged in Czech Republic and Austria in September. The Americans went home with the Von Cramm Cup (men's 60 age group), Alice Marble Cup (women's 60), Jack Crawford Cup (men's 70), Bitsy Grant Cup (men's 75), Queens' Cup (women's 75) and Gardnar Mulloy Cup (men's 80). Spain won the Britannia Cup (men's 65), France the Kitty Godfree Cup (women's 65), Great Britain the Althea Gibson Cup (women's 70) and Canada claimed the Doris Hart Cup (women's 80). One week later, with the action concentrated on three venues in Austria, 653 players from 35 countries took part in the ITF Super-Seniors World Individual Championships. The singles titles were won by Tina Karwasky of USA (women's 60), Radovan Cizek of Czech Republic (men's 60), Gail Benedetti of France (women's 65), Jorge Camina Borda of Spain (men's 65), Michele Bichon of France (women's 70), Peter Pokorny of Canada (men's 70), Roz King of USA (women's 75), Giovanni Argentini of Italy (men's 75), Muffie Grieve of Canada (women's 80), John Powless of USA (men's 80), Doris Jane Lutz of USA (inaugural women's 85) and Doug Corbett of Australia (men's 85).
