Berdych has a 17-1 record in Davis Cup singles and doubles over the last two years Argentine captain Martin Jaite and Leonardo Mayer watched by the travelling fans Juan Monaco's loss to Radek Stepanek in the first match was pivotal But having won its first title at home, a second title will have to come in the cauldron of Belgrade if it's to happen in 2013. The last time the Czechs travelled to Belgrade — in the 2010 semifinals — could give us a guide as to how this year's final will pan out. Djokovic had sat out the first day, and watched in horror as the wily Stepanek outplayed Troicki. Fortunately Tipsarevic was on top form to take advantage of a tired Berdych, who two months before had been in the Wimbledon final but was outthought as Serbia ended the first day 1-1. Berdych and Stepanek won the doubles over Djokovic and Zimonjic, but Djokovic rallied from a set and a break down in the fourth rubber to beat Berdych in four sets. That set up Tipsarevic to be Serbia's hero of the weekend, as he dispatched a fatigued Stepanek in straight sets to make it 3-2. As Berdych admitted after this year's semifinals, "Novak can only win two points, so we have to win the other three, and we've won many ties like that." With that logic, there's every reason to hope the final will be decided once again on a live fifth rubber. www.itftennis.com The Czechs won the tie with the doubles Argentina never seemed able to trouble a Czech pair riding the crest of the wave of their country's phenomenal success in Davis and Fed Cup. Stepanek is hungry for more Davis Cup success ITFWORLD AUTUMN 2013 19
