show stealers AUSTRALIAN OPEN JUNIORS Ana Konjuh is the first Croatian girl to win the Aussie Open since Jelena Kostanic in 1998 N ick Kyrgios saw off another Australian hope in Melbourne, 16-year-old Thanasi Kokkinakis, 76 63 while Ana Konjuh, already a Fed Cup player at the tender age of 15, outplayed No. 2 seed Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic 63 64 for the first of what could be several junior crowns. When the draws were made for the first junior Grand Slam of the year, Nikola Milojevic of Serbia and Siniakova were considered favourites for the singles events, but Kyrgios and Konjuh came into the tournament in the best form and carried that over for the most successful weeks of their careers to date. 28 ITFWORLD SPRING 2013 Nick Kyrgios is already looking ahead to Roland Garros At 17, Kyrgios had won two doubles Grand Slams in 2012 and reached the final of a third. But after winning the warm-up singles event in Traralgon, his confidence was up. He romped through the draw without losing a set, beating No. 7 seed Wayne Montgomery of South Africa and No. 8 seed Filippo Baldi, an Italian who had beaten top seed Milojevic in the quarterfinals. In the other half of the draw, Kokkinakis had knocked out second seed Gianluigi Quinzi of Italy in a cracking last-eight battle and then crushed Borna Coric of Croatia, a protege of Goran Ivanisevic, to make it two Australians into the boys��� final for the first time since 1994. Kokkinakis had signalled his talent when he stepped in as a late replacement in the Hopman Cup mixed team event at the start of the month, but unfortunately a recurrence of a back injury hampered him in the final against Kyrgios. Still it was a close affair, as he had two set points in the opening set of the final on Rod Laver Arena but Kyrgios won the tiebreak and eased away in the second set to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Bernard Tomic in winning his home title. ���I���m pretty stoked with the last two weeks I���ve had, winning the lead-up tournament and now the Australian Open,��� Kyrgios said. ���It���s been a great start to the year.
