2021 ITF Annual Review 42 MAJOR EVENTS The ITF manages tennis and wheelchair tennis at the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and it is an ITF2024 strategic priority to elevate the posi on of tennis within the Olympics and Paralympics. The Games provide players with the chance to represent their country and win medals in a mul -sport event with a global stage, and the income we receive from the Games is reinvested into developing tennis. The Olympics and Paralympics showcase tennis and give it visibility all over the world. They have contributed to the sheer spread of na ons represented in elite tennis and, coupled with the ITF's team compe ons, provide clear inspira on and role models for aspiring players, whether their ambi on is to play recrea onally or join the professional game. They are a vital development tool for these reasons. Tokyo 2020 In 2021, the ITF con nued its collabora on with the Interna onal Olympic Commi ee (IOC) and Interna onal Paralympic Commi ee (IPC) to deliver tennis events as part of the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, staged in July-August and August-September respec vely due to Covid-19. This involved establishing and implemen ng effec ve Covid-19 protocols to ensure the health and safety of all players and personnel. Tennis took centre stage with four- me Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka and eight- me Grand Slam women's wheelchair winner Yui Kamiji ligh ng the flames at the Olympic and Paralympic Opening Ceremonies. With the compe ons to be held at France's Grand Slam venue, Roland Garros, the event delivery model will seek to harness the appeal of this iconic site and u lise the exis ng staff experience and opera onal processes already in place. In 2022, the ITF will publish the qualifica on systems for the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics, suppor ng players and na ons in their prepara ons.
