OLYMPIC TENNIS EVENT it was a third olympic doubles title for the williams sisters who also won gold at sydney 2000 and beijing 2008 S even years of planning and hard work were rewarded when the 2012 Olympic Tennis Event, held at the iconic All England Club, was a triumphant success. The Club, decked out in Olympic colours, provided the perfect backdrop to the Olympic Tennis Event which has become one of the most important competitions in tennis. The facilities were without peer and the atmosphere, while very different from the Championships, was equally amazing. With the enthusiastic participation of the top players, the Olympic Tennis Event attracted the world's media from both print and broadcast with wall-to-wall coverage on many networks around the world. The stands were full and the VIP list impressive with guests including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the US First Lady Michelle Obama, IOC President Jacques Rogge, LOCOG 6 PROFESSIONAL TENNIS Chairman Sebastian Coe, many heads of state and the elite from the Olympic movement and the tennis family. It was a dream scenario for the thousands of British fans who attended the event with Andy Murray defeating Roger Federer to win the gold medal. Just three weeks earlier, Murray had lost in the Wimbledon final to Federer but this time he produced an emphatic straight sets victory over the Swiss to secure Olympic glory. The bronze medal was awarded to an emotional Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina, who overcame Serbia's Novak Djokovic 75 64. Serena Williams of the United States claimed her first singles gold medal in the Olympics after she soundly defeated Maria Sharapova of Russia in the final 60 61. Victoria Azarenka of Belarus defeated Maria Kirilenko of Russia to take the bronze.
