Evonne. Like Billie Jean, Margaret, Martina, Chrissie, Steffi, Monica, Serena, Venus and the other greats of the modern women's game, no last name is required. And yet, Evonne GG (for Granny Goolagong) were the letters she requested be inscribed on the bracelet she received after being presented with the mothers' award at an emotional recent WTA reunion. The matriarch who now reads bedtime stories to her grandchildren still recalls so vividly the fairytale that sparked her own. "I read a 'Princess Magazine' story about a princess who was found, trained and taken to this place called Wimbledon, where she played on this magical centre court and won," says Goolagong Cawley. ➝ This year's recipient of the ITF's prestigious Philippe Chatrier Award is Evonne Goolagong Cawley.
