Wawrinka was clearly underdone in a second-round loss. Instead, it was happy days for underdogs. No. 58 Chung was joined in the semifinals by No. 49 Kyle Edmund. The 23-year-old Brit ousted No. 11 seed Kevin Anderson and No. 3 Grigor Dimitrov, just when Dimitrov had quelled the dangerous Nick Kyrgios to emerge as a trendy pick for the title. But a weary Edmund was no match in the semis for Cilic, a brisk 6-2 7-6(4) 6-2 winner. Another bolter was No. 94 American Tennys Sandgren (the intriguing name comes from his Swedish ancestry rather than the game). The 26-year-old toppled No. 9 Wawrinka and No. 5 Dominic Thiem before bowing to Chung in the first all-unseeded quarterfinal at Melbourne Park for 20 years. Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic, reuniting after two seasons, beat Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina 6-4 6-3 for the women's doubles title, denying the Russians a career Grand Slam. Babos had the 'double double' in her sights but she and veteran Rohan Bopanna fell in the mixed final 2-6 6-4 [11-9] to first-time pairing Gabriela Dabrowski and Croatia's Mate Pavic. The double joy instead belonged to 24-year-old Pavic, who won the mixed title less than 24 hours after his victory in the men's doubles with 37-year-old Oliver Marach. The Croatian-Austrian duo overcame Colombians Robert Farah and Juan Sebastian Cabal 6-4 6-4. ■ Rod Laver Arena Simona Halep was a Grand Slam runner-up for a third time ITFWorld // SPRING 2018 33
