Keys, the world No. 16, had undergone two wrist operations since December, while Stephens, the world No. 83, had returned to competition at Wimbledon after a 10-month break following foot surgery. Only six weeks earlier she had been ranked No. 957 in the world. The final lasted just 61 minutes as Stephens, hitting the ball with great consistency, capitalised on Keys' 30 unforced errors to win 63 60. Stephens was the lowest-ranked woman ever to win the title, Kim Clijsters having been unranked when she won in 2009 in only her third comeback tournament after a two-year break. Stephens was also only the fifth unseeded woman to win a Grand Slam singles title in the Open era.
