The Wimbledon women's final between sentimental favourite Venus Williams and Garbine Muguruza began in scintillating fashion. If Federer and Cilic lacked in crucial points, the first set featuring Williams and Muguruza did not. The latter got the better of it and proceeded to win a second major. The 37-year-old Williams benefited from the first break point at 2-3. She constructed the point beautifully, only to send a forehand into the net with her foe in trouble. And with the Spaniard serving at 4-5 in the first, Williams manufactured two successive set points. A 19-shot rally ensued on the first, with Williams blinking by erring on another forehand. Muguruza hung on and elevated her game, while Williams never recovered and fell 75 60. 'Bagels' were on display in the women's doubles final, too, the Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina beating Chinese Taipei's Chan Hao-ching and Romania's Monica Niculescu 60 60 immediately following the marathon men's doubles. Williams was foiled by younger sister Serena — currently pregnant — in the Australian Open final, and with Muguruza inflicting a defeat in the Wimbledon final, it means she is still waiting to collect a first Grand Slam title since 2008. Muguruza, meanwhile, recovered in perfect fashion after leaving the French Open in tears having been the defending champion. Not since one of her coaches, Conchita Martinez in 1994, had a Spanish woman tasted the ultimate success at London's famous SW19 postcode. The 23-year-old also became the first player to beat both Williams sisters in Grand Slam finals. That is proof of Muguruza's ability to produce on the grandest of stages, as is the fact that of her four career titles, two have been Grand Slams. "I always come very motivated to Grand Slams," said Muguruza.
