51 Mary Joe: It was just the most amazing experience I've ever had. Winning was really the bonus. Winning was the icing on top of the cake. Just being there and being part of the very elite, the very best of the best, of every sport, just that in itself. We were like, "Oh my gosh, look over there, it's Carl Lewis, oh my gosh look over there." The swimmers, it didn't matter. You were a part of something bigger than you. Gigi: It was like the most amazing rush of my life, walking into the stadium in Atlanta. We were in the tunnel going out and the whole team USA, like 680 people, started chanting "USA, USA, USA" in this tunnel and it was reverberating and I still get goosebumps thinking about it. Mary Joe: I think about it all the time. I have my medals in my family room so I see them all the time. I have pictures with Gigi all over the house. I take them to school all the time for show-and-tell. Every Olympics, whether it's winter or summer, those medals come out and you share the stories. So I think about it a lot. Gigi: I bring them out, I do a lot of community work where I live and go to a lot of schools, I'm in Connecticut and work at a club and do doubles clinics throughout the country, and I bring them because people are so excited to see them. When I bring them out it almost feels like somebody else did it, I'm so removed from it. I mean, what's the point of putting them away. If you come into my house I have trophy shelves and they're right on the shelves. Mary Joe: Gigi and I didn't really play together. We just came together for the Olympics. She had her longtime partnership with Natasha [Zvereva] and they won everything. You could never really get in there too often to play with her. But we ended up complementing each other really well. You know, you had the fiery temperament and I was the calm one. I had the Latin going, too, but I didn't have the temper and the flashiness. My steady game complemented the way she was able to put things away and create. It was just two different game styles come together perfectly. Winning was really the bonus. It was the icing on top of the cake.
