147 BARCELONA 1992 MEN'S DOUBLES BRONZE It was really big because it was the only Argentinian medal of those Games. W e were lucky at that time because there was not a match to decide the bronze medal. Even now someone has found the images, not many from that time, and you can watch that moment on YouTube. In general terms, I'm really bad remembering matches of my career but I remember those ones quite well. For me it is more exciting now than in that moment, when you remember all those feelings, in the distance, and you are asked about them. In our case it was really big because it was the only Argentinian medal of those Games. That was the difference. Boris Becker had lost in singles in the early rounds and from that moment, it had been a big goal for him to have a good doubles competition, because he was wishing to win an Olympic medal. So this made me see the big value of it all. We lost to him and [Michael] Stich [in the semifinals] but we were close to the victory and this made you know we did a great job. It is a weird sensation because in tennis you play for winning points and money, and in the Games there weren't any. It is about history. So maybe this was better for me, because I didn't have a big pressure on me, I didn't realise about all the meaning of the Games. I was normally under a lot of pressure in the rest of the competitions but not in those Games. Once I finally came back to Argentina, people from my club, the Adrogue Tennis Club, prepared me a party. I don't have a lot of big trophies, and the only thing which is in a showcase at home is that medal. It is now together with some other medals from my children's junior competitions at their school. I went to see the [Barcelona] 100 metres final, that magical moment. And then you see them in the Olympic Village. I remember Carl Lewis doing warm-up exercises. It is like the Disneyland of sports. I always remember Barcelona because the medal is at home. Anyway, together with Martin Jaite we do different events and in my presentation they always say "Olympic medallist." And of course every four years, when the Games take place, I enjoy them. Now, 24 years later, I know that people who remember me as a tennis player, always mention Barcelona. And that is what I am.
