Fed Cup debutant Daria Gavrilova and Christina McHale upsetting Sam Stosur. USA captain Mary Joe Fernandez sprung a surprise by nominating Coco Vandeweghe to play on day two against Stosur, but it paid off as the Australian collapsed and Vandeweghe came back from 62 2-0 down to seal what was eventually a 4-0 victory. In the World Group II play-offs, Chinese Taipei turned up in Inowroclaw with a completely different team to the one which had negotiated its way through Asia/Oceania Group I in February and still managed to pull off a 4-1 victory against a Poland side missing its star player Agnieszka Radwanska to claim a place in World Group II for the first time. Slovakia also clinched promotion, Dominika Cibulkova winning twice in a 3-2 defeat of Canada in Bratislava. Serbia, without Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic, could not avoid relegation to Europe/Africa Group I as it fell to a 3-2 defeat by Belgium in Belgrade, while the only thing that went wrong for Ukraine in Kiev was a rain delay on the first day as the hosts did not drop a set in a 4-0 win against Argentina. Boosted by the recent form of Victoria Azarenka, Belarus reached the World Group for the first time in its history. Coco Vandeweghe's performance is saluted by US captain Mary Joe Fernandez Dominika Cibulkova celebrates Slovakia's promotion to World Group II Two wins from Garbine Muguruza saw Spain promoted to the top tier
