28 ITFWORLD WINTER 2014 A contrast of styles made for a thrilling boys' final as 18-year-old Pole Kamil Majchrzak countered the brute- force ground strokes of Brazilian Orlando Luz, two years his junior, with steady, measured hitting. While Luz mixed his forceful groundstrokes with the odd crafty drop shot in an attempt to break Majchrzak's resolve, the Pole refused to be overawed — ultimately rounding out a 64 75 triumph to claim gold in front of the watching ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti. "I'm going to keep the gold medal very close to me all the time," Majchrzak declared. "It's a gold medal for Poland and I'm very proud I could represent my country." Luz took his defeat with good grace. "Silver is a great medal too," said the junior world No. 2, and the following day he was rewarded with a gold in the boys' doubles final alongside compatriot Marcelo Zormann. The Brazilian pairing closed out a fierce battle with Russia's Karen Khachanov and boys' singles bronze medallist Andrey Rublev in the nick of time with another heavy downpour imminent, triumphing 75 36 [10-3] to end their Nanjing experience on a high. It was a second major triumph for the pair as a team in 2014, having combined to win the boys' doubles title at Wimbledon in July. "This is for our country so it's amazing for me," said a jubilant Luz. "At Wimbledon, we were playing for us but now I have a gold and a silver medal so I'm very happy." An enduring shower meant the final of the mixed doubles event, making its Youth Olympic debut two years after returning to the Olympic programme at London 2012, was forced indoors for a late-night finish. Far from a damp squib, hundreds of fans, including athletes from other sports, stayed to watch a rousing contest under the roof. Switzerland's Jil Teichmann and Poland's Jan Zielinski ultimately made their late night worthwhile, defeating China's Ye Qui Yu and Japan's Jumpei Yamasaki 46 63 [10-4] to put a golden seal on a partnership that had been forged months in advance.
