18 ITFWORLD SUMMER 2014 Murray, who had played some of his best tennis since his back operation in September to reach the Roland Garros semifinals, began the defence of his Wimbledon title in impressive fashion, but after sweeping into the quarterfinals without dropping a set was comprehensively outplayed by Dimitrov. Djokovic was run close by Radek Stepanek in the second round, by Marin Cilic in the quarterfinals and by Dimitrov in the semifinals, while Federer dropped only one set — to his fellow Swiss Wawrinka in the quarterfinals — en route to his ninth Wimbledon final. At 32 Federer was aiming to become the first man to win eight Wimbledon singles titles and the oldest to win there in the Open era. The final was a match of the highest quality. Djokovic, who had lost five of his six previous Grand Slam finals, produced one of his best performances to win 67 64 76 57 64. Federer saved a match point in the fourth set, in which he had been 2-5 down, and had his chances in the decider, but Djokovic held firm to secure his seventh Grand Slam title. The Serb, who reclaimed the world No. 1 ranking from Nadal, said it had been the best quality Grand Slam final in which he had competed. It provided vindication for the recruitment to his coaching team of Boris Becker, who came out on top in a renewal of his rivalry with Stefan Edberg, who is part of Federer's entourage.
