Champion Nation's Players to Win Six or More Singles in a Year 47 players from the champion nation have won six or more singles matches in a single year of Davis Cup competition. In the years of the Challenge Round (1900-1971) this was only possible if the champion nation had gone through the regional zones on their way to the title. From 1972-1980 all nations reaching the Final Round played through regional zones and from 1981 all nations reaching the World Group Final played four ties. John McEnroe (1982) is the only player to play and win a maximum eight singles rubbers since the introduction of the World Group. Before that, Donald Budge (1937), Bjorn Borg (1975) and McEnroe (1979) had all played and won the maximum number of singles rubbers for their respective nations. Ken Rosewall (1955) played in the maximum number of singles rubbers for Australia, winning all but one rubber, which was unfinished. Budge (1937) and McEnroe (1982) hold the further distinction of being the only two players in Davis Cup history to play and win the maximum number of both singles and doubles rubbers in a single year.
