14 • ITF Global Tennis Report 2021 TOTAL NUMBER OF TENNIS CLUBS The number of tennis clubs, comprising both 'affiliated' and 'non-affiliated' clubs. An 'affiliated' tennis club is a recognised tennis club, tennis facility, and/or tennis venue that has a formal registra on (license, membership, subscrip on or affilia on) to a Na onal Associa on. A 'non-affiliated' tennis club is a recognised tennis club, tennis facility, and/or tennis venue that is not affiliated to a Na onal Associa on. From 40 out of the 41 contribu ng Na onal Associa ons: • There are 115,584 tennis clubs iden fied, with 90% of these located in 13 na ons. • The number of tennis clubs iden fied in these na ons has increased by over 85% since 2018. • 80.3% of these tennis clubs are in two regions: North America and Europe. RATIO OF TOTAL TENNIS CLUBS TO POPULATION Using each na on's total tennis club numbers, we calculated the total number of tennis clubs rela ve to a na on's popula on (using popula on data from United Na ons World Popula on Prospects 2019). Results are reported per 1,000 popula on. From 40 out of the 41 contribu ng Na onal Associa ons: • For every tennis club iden fied, there are 44,135 people or 754 tennis players (1,340 players in 2018). • The North America region has the highest propor on of tennis clubs rela ve to its popula on (0.15 clubs per 1,000 popula on, or 6,541 people per tennis club).
