12 • ITF Global Tennis Report 2021 TOTAL TENNIS PLAYER POPULATION Na onal Associa ons provided a figure for the total number of known unique tennis players that they considered to have par cipated in tennis on at least one occasion during a 12-month period, for example during 2020. Na onal Associa ons were asked to include any wheelchair tennis and beach tennis par cipants in the total figure, and also a gender breakdown. From the 41 contribu ng Na onal Associa ons: • There are over 87 million tennis players, with 95% of these players coming from 16 na ons. • The total number of tennis players in the 41 na ons has grown by 4.5% since 2018. • This growth is based on a revised 2018 baseline figure of 83.4 million players for the 41 na ons, taking into considera on revisions to 2018 data outlined on the previous page. • Approximately seven out of every 100 players are registered to their Na onal Associa on.* See Appendix B for the cumula ve total distribu ons for total tennis players. See Fig 1 • Regionally, Asia contributes the highest number of tennis players (more than 33 million) for the 41 na ons, with 38.3% of the playing popula on coming from Asian countries. • Over 90% of the playing popula on originates in three regions: Asia, North America and Europe. See Appendix C for the breakdown of total tennis players, by region. See Fig 2 PERCENTAGE OF THE POPULATION THAT PLAYS TENNIS Using each na on's total tennis player numbers, we calculated tennis players as a percentage of their na on's popula on (using popula on data from United Na ons World Popula on Prospects 2019). From the 41 contribu ng Na onal Associa ons: • 1.71% of their popula on plays tennis. This is compared to 1.68% in these na ons in 2018. • The North America region has the highest percentage of its popula on playing tennis (6.5%). See Fig 3 TENNIS PLAYER GENDER BALANCE We established the percentage of a na on's tennis-playing popula on which is female. This was only calculated if a na on was able to provide a breakdown of male and female players. From 40 out of the 41 contribu ng Na onal Associa ons: • 40.7% of the playing popula on is female. • Regionally, Africa has the most gender-balanced playing popula on, with 50.3% of its players being female. See Appendix B for the total tennis player gender balance, by na on rank.
