18 • ITF Global Tennis Report 2021 TOTAL NUMBER OF TENNIS COACHES The survey reports the number of tennis coaches who are Na onal Associa on-cer fied coaches, which means they are either recorded and/or licensed in a na on's register or database. A 'cer fied coach' is an individual who has successfully completed a tennis educa on cer fica on course administered by a Na onal Associa on or by the ITF. From the 41 contribu ng Na onal Associa ons: • There are 149,110 tennis coaches reported, 6.9% more than for the same na ons in 2018. • 90% of these coaches work in 19 na ons. See Fig 13 • Europe has more tennis coaches than any other region, contribu ng 59.9% of these coaches. See Appendix B for the cumula ve total distribu ons for total tennis coaches. See Fig 14 See Appendix C for the breakdown of total tennis coaches, by region. RATIO OF TOTAL TENNIS COACHES TO PLAYER POPULATION Using each na on's total tennis coach numbers, we calculated the number of tennis coaches rela ve to a na on's total tennis-playing popula on. Results are reported per 1,000 tennis players. From the 41 contribu ng Na onal Associa ons: • For every tennis coach reported, there are 585 tennis players (598 in 2018). • Europe is the region with the highest propor on of coaches rela ve to tennis players (3.95 coaches for every 1,000 players, or 253 players to every tennis coach). See Fig 15 and 16 TENNIS COACH GENDER BALANCE To assess the gender balance, we calculated the percentage of a na on's total tennis coaches that are female. This was only calculated if a na on was able to provide a breakdown of male and female coaches. From the 41 contribu ng Na onal Associa ons: • 22.3% of tennis coaches are female. This compares to 21.5% for these na ons in 2018. • Regionally, Asia has the most gender-balanced coaching popula on, with 28.0% of its coaches being female, followed by Oceania with 27.4% of coaches being female.
