CLASS IS PERMANENT CLASS IS PERMANENT King van Nostrand triumphed in the Men's 85s singles and doubles WHILE SILVERWARE WAS DISPERSED ACROSS THE GLOBE, A FAIR PROPORTION RETURNED TO THE RESIDENCE OF JAIRO VELASCO Ramirez after the Spaniard proved the star of the ITF Super-Seniors World Individual Championships in Umag. Ramirez scooped three trophies in Croatia's westernmost city, triumphing in the Men's 70s singles, Men's 70s doubles and mixed 70s doubles and firing himself to summit of the world rankings in all disciplines as a result. While no other competitor could equal Ramirez's haul of three tournament victories, there were a number who enjoyed a more than successful week on the Istrian Coast and chalked up two wins. Austria's Peter Pokorny sealed his 12th World Individual singles titles by defeating Germany's Peter Adrigan in the Men's 75s final, while he also secured mixed doubles joy alongside South Africa's Petro Kruger. American King van Nostrand proved too strong in the Men's 85s singles, dousing the threat of top seed Henri Crutchet in the final, and teamed up with compatriot John Prowless to clinch men's doubles success. Australia's Kerry Ballard prevailed in the Women's 70s singles as well as the women's doubles, partnering Shirley Fox to victory against American Liane Bryson and Heidi Eisterlehner of Germany. Further Australian delight arrived in the Women's 85s singles as Jean Stevens cleared the final hurdle of France's Odile Noix Chateau, while her and Claude Wenzel were an irresistible force in the mixed doubles. At the ITF Super-Seniors World Team Championships in Umag the week before, trophies were not the sole preserve of the USA although the Stars and Stripes was the flag most commonly waved within the winners' enclosure. USA collected a total of five trophies, while France returned home with two and Denmark, Chile and Argentina picked up one. As with all Seniors tournaments, however, the winning of titles was not the sole consideration, with the sense of camaraderie within the international community, health, fitness and competitiveness key elements of the events. ■ The action in Umag proved exciting and gripping
