04 ITFWorld // AUTUMN 2019 How pleasing was it to be re-elected during the first round of vo ng with such a healthy share of the vote? I was very proud. To receive more than 60 per cent of the vote, especially with three other candidates, was extremely pleasing. I'm delighted with the mandate from the nations and the support I have been given to continue the work which has been embarked upon with ITF2024. What is your message to the ITF's member na ons and their Na onal Associa ons as you begin a second term in office? The main message is that I'm excited to continue the work we have started. We will continue to engage with the nations and listen. We will continue to look at ways of transforming the ITF and tennis in a positive way. The intention is to strengthen the voice of the nations and heighten the standing of our member nations within the tennis community. What are your immediate priori es as you begin your second term in office? The immediate priority is ensuring that we successfully implement the Davis Cup by Rakuten Madrid Finals in November. We must ensure that the environment of the tournament and the competition itself is at the level the nations expect. Following quickly on the heels of the Davis Cup Madrid Finals will be April's Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Finals in Budapest and we want this 12-team finale to the competition to be equally as world class as the men's equivalent. These are two vitally important occasions. Beyond that, the ambition is to grow the ITF to a $160m business and we know that next year we will be at the $130m level, so we are on course. We also intend to increase Development spending to more than $20m by 2024. In addition, certain governance reforms need to be considered. The ITF is a Bahamas-based company currently and we are going to evaluate whether this is right for the organisation or if it might be prudent to have that base elsewhere. Also, it is envisaged that by 2021 we will have at least tripled the size of the business from when I assumed the position of ITF President in 2015. It is, therefore, important to look at the roles of Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer and consider whether there is a need to split these into two positions, for instance. We need to put some thought into this with a view to recommendations being taken forward to next year's ITF Conference and AGM. How confident are you that you will be able to deliver each and every aspect of the manifesto upon which you were re-elected? I made a series of promises in 2015 and I delivered on those. I said that we would double the ITF's revenue, and, over the last four years, we have more than doubled revenue – from $52m to $110m. I also promised that we would double spending on Development and this was achieved, with $12.9m outlaid in 2019. I said that the ITF would listen to and engage with the nations, and this year's ITF Conference and AGM was great testament to that. In 2015, 101 nations were present at T H E P R E S I D E N T ' S Q & A I made a series of promises in 2015 and I delivered on those. 04 ITFWorld // AUTUMN 2019 At the ITF Conference and AGM in Lisbon in September, David Haggerty was re-elected as ITF President. The American received 259 of the 428 votes cast – 60.5% – and as he begins his second term in office, which will run from 2019-2023, ITFWorld sits down with the man at the helm to discuss his vision for the coming years. Forward not back
