O n court, 2018 was a year of entertainment, drama and intrigue. It was a joy to witness the old guard of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal claim yet more major tles before a resurgent Novak Djokovic ruled the men's game in the second half of the year. On the women's side, it was very gra fying to see Caroline Wozniacki and Simona Halep both earn Grand Slam rewards a er many years of hard work, Angelique Kerber proving that she belongs among the all- me greats, and the emergence of Naomi Osaka, who seems to be a champion for both the present and the future. In November, Czech Republic and Croa a won hard-fought finals to become worthy winners of the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas and Davis Cup by BNP Paribas, with both triumphant teams defea ng the defending champions, USA and France respec vely. Off court, 2018 also proved to be a hugely significant year. For the ITF, it was a year of change as we implemented reforms that will safeguard the long-term future of the game. At the 2018 ITF Conference and AGM, we passed historic reforms to the Davis Cup, which will elevate the compe on to new levels and ensure that it retains its righ ul place as a jewel in the crown of our sport. We also began a similar process for Fed Cup reform, as well as announcing important changes to our governance structure. Everything that we do at the ITF corresponds to our ITF2024 strategy. Launched in 2016, and now with two full years of work complete, ITF2024 will enable the ITF and its member Na onal Associa ons to achieve our central aim of delivering tennis for future genera ons. The strategy is divided into eight areas of special significance, and the work that every single ITF staff member does is aligned to support at least one (and, in many cases, several) of these eight priori es. Once again, our Annual Review is divided into eight sec ons this year, each covering one of the eight strategic priori es. With 2018 being the second full year of ITF2024's implementa on, we are now be er able to evaluate our performance thus far. It is important to recognise what we have achieved – but it is even more important that we look at what we can improve. While this Annual Review will look back at our ac vi es in 2018 and celebrate success stories, we must remember never to be complacent, never to be content, and to look for new ways to strengthen the ITF in future. Davis Cup and Fed Cup by BNP Paribas are the ITF's flagship events and we were thrilled to once again see such great showcases of team tennis in the two finals in November. Czech Republic regained its Fed Cup crown in front of a full house in Prague, with a 3-0 defeat of 2017 champions USA. The scoreline belies the quality of the tennis – review of the year by itf president david haggerty ITF PRESIDENT'S REVIEW OF THE YEAR / 04
