ITFWorld // SUMMER 2018 39 Latisha Chan and Martina Hingis's turn to walk the red carpet as Women's Doubles World Champions. Hingis, now retired for what she says is the last time, revealed to Carillo that it was Chan who encouraged her to embark on a 2017 season that ended with the pair winning nine titles, including the US Open, and finishing at No. 1. "She was the one who helped me believe I could win big tournaments again," said the Swiss star. "I had some doubts and perhaps felt it was time to move on and do something else but when I started playing with her I felt we could be the No. 1 team out there. "That was the beginning of the story we had last year and I'll never forget it. It was one of my best years on tour." Women's World Champion Garbine Muguruza was filmed receiving her award earlier in the day. "It is incredible to be World Champion," she said. "I am so grateful. It was an incredible year, winning my second Grand Slam title at Wimbledon and achieving world No. 1." Rafael Nadal, Men's World Champion and soon to be Roland Garros champion for an astonishing 11th time, also sent best wishes as he prepared for his matches. "I am sad that I cannot spend this time with you but I would like to say thank you to everyone for this important award. I am very proud and it is a big honour." ■ France's Davis Cup win and the Fed Cup triumph of the United States were marked Martina Hingis and Latisha Chan alongside MC Mary Carillo Award winners with ITF President David Haggerty David Wagner in joyous mood with his trophy Axel Geller and Whitney Osuigwe were named ITF Junior World Champions
