ITFWorld // SUMMER 2018 21 ● In front of a crowd that had chanted "si se pueda [yes you can]" throughout the final, Monica Puig dropped to her knees after beating world No. 2 Angelique Kerber to become Puerto Rico's first Olympic champion and the country's maiden female medallist in any sport. Puig was also the first unseeded player to win gold since tennis's reintroduction to the Games. ● In the men's draw, Great Britain's flagbearer Andy Murray was the first player to win singles gold at consecutive Olympic Games as he triumphed 75 46 62 75 over Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro, who had destroyed top seed Novak Djokovic's quest for a career Golden Slam in the first round. ● Rafael Nadal arrived in Rio having not contested a match since pulling out of Roland Garros in tears in May due to a wrist injury, but he managed to reach the semifinals in the singles and the doubles final.
