● Steffi Graf, aged 19, was not content with the Holy Grail of a calendar-year Grand Slam and upgraded her trophy haul by securing gold in the women's singles, beating Argentina's Gabriela Sabatini in the final. Graf, who also won bronze in the doubles in Seoul, remains the only player to have ever won a calendar-year Golden Slam; her record from an utterly dominant season is unique and stands alone. ● Nicknamed 'Big Cat', Miloslav Mecir of then Czechoslovakia overcame Tim Mayotte of the United States to win the first gold medal in men's singles tennis, not including demonstration events, since 1924. Mecir had a penchant for beating Swedish players and duly dispatched reigning Wimbledon champion Stefan Edberg in the last four. Mecir also won bronze in the men's doubles alongside Milan Srejber. ● American Zina Garrison was another to win two medals in Seoul. In the doubles, she teamed up with fellow American Pam Shriver to earn top spot on the podium as the pair beat Czechs Jana Novotna and Helena Sukova in the gold medal match. Having overcome Shriver in the quarterfinals of the women's singles, Garrison succumbed to Graf in the last four to take bronze. 20 September – 1 October ITFWorld // SUMMER 2018 17 SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA 1988 ➝ Miloslav Mecir overcame Tim Mayotte to win gold West Germany's Steffi Graf sealed a calendar-year Golden Slam by beating Gabriela Sabatini
